Assam’s heart is swelled with pride after Lovlina Borgohain defeated Nien-Chin Chen in her quarterfinal bout of Women’s welterweight category 4-1 and moved to the semifinals. She is the north-eastern state’s first woman boxer to qualify for the Olympics and now the first Assamese Olympics medal winner pugilist. The Indian boxer signed off with a bronze medal in her debut Olympic Games.

Sports have always played a significant role in Lovlina’s life. Her elder twin sisters Licha and Lima competed at the national level kickboxing. Following their footsteps, Lovlina also started her career as a kickboxer, but later switched to boxing. After that, things only got better for her.

Lovlina continued to better her skills. Having found her love in boxing, she was always on the lookout for an opportunity. Her formal entry into the world of boxing happened in 2012. Lovlina participated in a trial conducted by the Sports Authority of India (SAI) at her school. She was noticed by the then boxing coach of SAI, Guwahati Region, Mr. Padum Boro. Ever since then, there was no looking back. She was later trained by Chief Women’s Coach Shiv Singh.
